MEF 3.0 is a transformational global services framework for defining, delivering, and certifying agile, assured, and orchestrated communication services across a global ecosystem of automated networks. MEF 3.0 blends sophisticated, standardized services with an emerging suite of LSO (Lifecycle Service Orchestration) APIs to provide an on-demand, cloud-centric experience with unprecedented user- and application-directed control over network resources and service capabilities.

MEF 3.0 is comprised of four major elements:

Standardized, Orchestrated Services. The MEF 3.0 service family includes dynamic Carrier Ethernet, Layer 1, IP, SD-WAN, Security-as-a-Service, and other virtualized services that will be orchestrated over programmable networks using LSO APIs. MEF 3.0 CE R1 is the first release within the MEF 3.0 framework.

LSO APIs. MEF’s LSO Reference Architecture guides agile development of standardized LSO APIs that enable orchestration of MEF 3.0 services across multiple providers and over multiple network technology domains (e.g., Packet WAN, Optical Transport, SD-WAN, 5G, etc.).

Service and Technology Certifications. MEF is increasing the agility of its popular certification programs to accelerate availability and adoption of MEF 3.0 certified services and technologies. MEF 3.0 certification is delivered by MEF’s testing partner, Iometrix, using an advanced cloud-based virtualized test platform that empowers companies to certify that their services and technologies comply with the latest MEF 3.0 standards.

Expanded Community Collaboration. MEF is working with many of the world’s leading service and technology providers, open source projects, certified professionals, standards associations, universities and enterprises to realize a shared vision of dynamic services orchestrated across automated networks.

MEF has created a new compute, storage, and networking platform – MEFnet – that enables development, testing, integration, and showcasing of MEF 3.0 implementations using open source and commercial products. MEF 3.0 implementation projects will help accelerate the understanding and adoption of MEF 3.0, as well as provide immediate feedback for standards development within MEF.

Please see recent MEF 3.0 videos below that include numerous industry perspectives on our exciting work:

Topic 1: Virtual Cloud Exchange Demonstration by Vineet Anshuman, Tata Communications

Virtual Cloud Exchange allows enterprises to connect to clouds of all types via managed service provider networks and/or via data centre co-lo.  VCX  is multi-tenant and carrier grade all managed via a virtualized services platform. Tata’s Virtual Cloud exchange utilizes a solution that is all software driven managed by Lifecycle Service Orchestrator (LSO), SDN Controller and NFV  utilizing commodity general purpose compute. The platform supports layer 2, layer 3 NAT functionality and any layer4- Layer 7 function using VNFs, using a  standards based VIM scale out NFVI architecture. The solution leverages LSO  which instantiates a set of VNFs for a given tenant automatically, on an already established NFV Infrastructure that is shared between all tenants. MEF LSO can then be leveraged to include cloud APIs from the major providers like Microsoft, Google and Amazon.

Workshop I – Standardizing MEF 3.0 Services (Layer 1, CE, IP & SD-WAN)

With the MEF 3.0 global services framework, MEF is uniting industry efforts to enable orchestrated, on-demand connectivity and virtualized services across a global ecosystem of automated networks. This workshop provides a progress report on standardization work related to orchestration-ready Layer 1, CE, IP, and SD-WAN services.

9:30 - 10:00

Workshop II – MEF 3.0 Services & Technology Certification & MEF Professional Certification Programs

MEF has increased the agility of its popular service and equipment certification programs and expanded its professional certification program to accelerate development and adoption of MEF 3.0 services and technologies. This workshop will bring you up to speed on the latest developments.

MEF 3.0 certification is delivered by MEF’s testing partner, Iometrix, on a revolutionary on-demand, cloud-based virtual test platform with user-initiated testing. The MEF 3.0 framework provides the ability, for the first time, to move to an incremental release approach for both services and LSO APIs and to tightly align certification with each release.

In 2017, MEF introduced a Professional Certification Framework for creating a global base of certified professionals with the leading-edge skills required to build automated, virtualized, and interconnected networks powered by LSO, SDN, NFV, and CE. The framework now includes Carrier Ethernet Certified Professionals (MEF-CECP), MEF Network Foundations (MEF-NF), and MEF-SDN/NFV certifications.

Special Edition - Workshop V – LSO and Sonata Early Adopters Workshop

MEF’s LSO Reference Architecture guides agile development of the models, processes, tools, and APIs that will enable orchestration of MEF 3.0 services across multiple providers and over multiple network technology domains. This workshop will provide an overview of the LSO RA and LSO Committee Projects and provide a status update on our efforts to standardize API functions at multiple interface reference points.
Attend this workshop to learn how Service Providers are preparing to adopt Sonata APIs into their infrastructure. Learn about the top Sonata use cases, roadmap, API availability and API-driven services certification. Hear from vendors on availability and support for Sonata-based commercial offerings.
