MEF Members Meeting - Los Angeles

Introduction to MEF Meetings

Our next Quarterly Members Meeting will be held in Los Angeles, California, USA on January 23-26, 2017. Our Quarterly and Annual Meetings are the gathering place of our increasingly diverse membership community with the goals of:

  • Informing our members of and progressing work across the 40+ projects currently underway
  • On-boarding new member companies and participants from existing member organizations
  • Brainstorming and initiating new work in support of MEF's vision
  • Networking with global MEF colleagues and representatives of partner organizations such as open source projects and SDOs

Backdrop to the Los Angeles Meeting/Areas of Work Focus

MEF is clearly established as the driving force enabling agile, assured, and orchestrated Third Network services. These emerging services provide an on-demand experience with user-directed control over service capabilities and cloud connectivity. Third Network services are delivered over automated, virtualized, and interconnected networks powered by LSO (Lifecycle Service Orchestration), SDN, NFV, and CE 2.0.

On November 10, 2016, MEF concluded its very successful MEF16 event, attracting more than 1,000 registrants from 260 companies and 30 countries. As we communicated in the concluding MEF 16 press release, the work of MEF and our industry partners have contributed significantly to the advancement of Third Network Services. Three major resultant themes shaped the development of the MEF16 program and were manifested in the popular Proof of Concept Showcase, the centerpiece of the Networking Hall. These were:

  1. Transition to Third Network Services is well underway
  2. Industry is supporting standardized, open-APIs to orchestrate services over multiple provider networks
  3. Development of Third Network services requires close collaboration of industry standards and open source organizations

At the Los Angeles meeting, building on the $80B+ annual CE market, we will progress existing work and generate new projects in the four areas as depicted in the following diagram:

About the Los Angeles Meeting Agenda

The Los Angeles agenda (currently preliminary) is designed to address the diverse interests of our membership. The agenda includes:

  • Editing/Deep Dive project breakout sessions to enable teams to catch up on work in advance of the formal commencement of the meeting
  • A New Work of MEF Orientation Session for new members and contributors, providing a "top down" view of MEF work, how we are structured, and how to stay informed and get engaged
  • An Opening Plenary where members hear readouts from the President, the Board of Directors, Committee Leaders, the CTO and COO
  • Numerous streams and breakouts, including both project-specific readouts and working sessions - these working sessions are key to advancing MEF's work and engaging new participants and are led either by the Technical and Operations Committee or Office of the CTO (the governance body for MEF's Open Initiatives, such as OpenCS and OpenLSO)
  • In addition to technically-oriented projects sessions, the Marketing Committee will review and refine a new 2017 Marketing Plan, and the Certification Committee will finalize and communicate plans for new Certification Programs in 2017
